31 October
Seawatching: 60 Common Scoter. Over 300 Pink-footed Geese south during the day.
On the land: Bearded Tit still at the Academy Pools. 6 Shorelark north over The Leas at 1.30pm and Red-necked Grebe, Short-eared Owl and 2 Snow Buntings also there. Willow Warbler and Lapland Bunting at Marsden Quarry.

30 October
Seawatching: 2 Arctic Skuas.
On the land: Bearded Tit at Sunderland AFC Academy Pools, 1 Wheatear, 2 Stonechat and 2 Brambling in Coastal Park early am. Long-eared Owl, 3 Northern Bullfinch and 2 Woodcock in Coastal Park late pm.

29 October
Seawatching:
Long-tailed Duck south off The Leas.
On the land:
Red-necked Grebe on sea off The Leas. 2 adult Mediterranean Gulls, 2-3 Short-eared Owls and 1 Woodcock also there.

28 October
Seawatching: 3 Velvet Scoters, 331 Wigeon, 103 Teal, 26 Goldeneye.
On the land: no sign of the Red-eyed Vireo, 2 Pallas's Warblers in south-west corner of Marsden Quarry, 1 Waxwing in off the sea at Whitburn and 1 at Marsden Quarry. 78 Fieldfare, 503 Redwing and 411 Blackbird in off the sea at The Leas. Water Rail in Trow Quarry. Also a large arrival of Woodcock (eg 9 in Coastal Park, 14 around Marsden Quarry).

27 October
Seawatching: 1 Arctic Skua, 2 Little Gulls, 17 Goldeneye.
On the land: Red-eyed Vireo along Quarry Lane, just west of Marsden Quarry mid-afternoon though very elusive in the high wind.
Buzzard and Short-eared Owl over South Shields Leas, 11 Whooper Swans south, 174 Fieldfare and 66 Redwings in off the sea.

26 October
Seawatching: 2 Whooper Swans north late afternoon.
On the land: Richard's Pipit still on South Shields Leas in the morning but flighty, also 8-10 Snow Bunting there and 15 Whooper Swans south. 5 Short-eared Owls over the Leas in the evening. 2 Stonechat and 4 Twite in Coastal Park.

25 October
On the land: Pallas's Warbler still in Marsden Quarry late afternoon, Richard's Pipit still on South Shields Leas late afternoon but flighty, 2+ Ring Ouzels in Marsden Quarry.

24 October
Seawatching: 1 Arctic Tern.
On the land: Pallas's Warbler in Marsden Quarry morning only, also 3 Ring Ouzel, 3 Northern Bullfinch and 2 Waxwing there. 1 Ring Ouzel in Shearwater estate.

23 October
Seawatching: 2 Arctic Skua.
On the land: 2 Pallas's Warbler (Shearwater estate), 2 Stonechat, 1 Swallow, 2 Short-eared Owl, 1 Peregrine in Coastal Park. Richard's Pipit, 2 Stonechat, 2 Short-eared Owl and 1 Lapland Bunting on South Shields Leas. Over 1100 Pink-footed Geese moving along coastal strip during the day.

22 October
On the land: Barred Warbler still at Sunderland, Short-eared Owl in Coastal Park, 1 Long-eared Owl (Whitburn village).

21 October
On the land: 1 Jack Snipe, 1 Waxwing, 2 Black Redstarts, 1 Ring Ouzel, smaller numbers of common migrants, Barred Warbler still at Sunderland.

20 October
On the land: large fall of common migrants along coast, 1 Pallas's Warbler in Coastal park at dusk, 3 Black Redstarts, c 60 Brambling in Coastal Park, 800-1000 Redwing, 150 Song Thrush, 150 Blackbird, 1 Ring Ouzel, 1 Shorelark, 1 Waxwing, 4 Northern Bullfinch, Barred Warbler and 2 Black Redstarts at Trow Quarry, Barred Warbler still at Sunderland.

19 October
On the land: Barred Warbler still at Sunderland.

18 October
Seawatching: 103 Barnacle Geese.
On the land: Barred Warbler still at Sunderland, Waxwing over Coastal Park, 1 Snow Bunting, 103 Barnacle Geese.

17 October
Seawatching: 1 Great Northern Diver and 3 Little Auks.
On the land: Barred Warbler still at Sunderland, Waxwing over Marsden Quarry, 4 Northern Bullfinch (2 Cornthwaite Park, 2 Coastal Park).

16 October
On the land: 1 Barred Warbler at Sunderland North Dock, 1 Northern Bullfinch at Cornthwaite Park, 1 Wood Warbler.

15 October
On the land: 1 Yellow-browed Warbler at Sunderland North Dock, 1 Mediterranean Gull.

14 October
On the land: 1 Yellow-browed Warbler at Sunderland North Dock along with common migrants.

13 October
On the land: 1 Ortolan Bunting near Souter lighthouse early morning, 1 Yellow-browed Warbler at Marsden Quarry, 1 Yellow-browed Warbler at Mere Knolls cemetery, 1 Peregrine.

12 October
On the land: still good numbers of Goldcrest arriving (eg 40 Trow Quarry, 25 Shearwater estate), 2 Stonechat, 1 Wheatear, 1 Short-eared Owl.

11 October
Seawatching: 4 Long-tailed Skua, 2 Red-necked Grebe, 8 Velvet Scoter, 2 Long-tailed Duck, 14 Goldeneye, 36 Arctic Skua, 200 Little Gull. 
On the land: 1 Long-eared Owl over coastal park and maybe same bird in Marsden Quarry, 2 Snow Buntings, 2 Woodcock, and arrival of Goldcrest with c50 present in coastal park alone.

10 October
Seawatching: 11 Manx and 4 Sooty Shearwaters, 7 Scaup, 4 Velvet Scoter, 9 Great and 13 Arctic Skua and 1 Long-tailed Skua.
On the land: 1 Short-eared Owl and 3 Stonechat in coastal park. 5 Chiffchaffs in Whitburn village.

9 October
Seawatching: 1 juv Sabine's Gull (north at 16.55), 9 Sooty Shearwater, 48 Manx Shearwater, 2 Balearic Shearwater, 3 Pomarine Skua, 21 Great Skua, 36 Arctic Skua, 3 Great Northern Diver, 75 Pale-bellied Brent Geese, 566 Wigeon, 240 Common Scoter, 33 Velvet Scoter, 1 Long-tailed Duck, 7 Scaup, 150 Little Gull.
On the land: migrants included 1 Woodcock, 2 Stonechats, 10 Goldcrest.

8 October
Seawatching: 1 juv Sabine's Gull, 1 Long-tailed Skua, 1 Great Northern Diver, 31 Barnacle Geese, 185 Pink-footed Geese, 11 Velvet Scoter, 4 Long-tailed Duck, 425 Little Gull, 1 Merlin.

7 October
Seawatching: about 1800 Barnacle Geese passed during the day.
On the land: Stonechat and Garden Warbler near the reserve pond.

A colour ringed Golden Plover seen at Whitburn Steel on 1 October had been ringed as an adult male at Widdybank Fell, Durham on 8 May 1996.

5 October
Seawatching: 1 Velvet Scoter, 6 Arctic Skuas, 215 Little Gulls feeding offshore in evening.

4 October
Seawatching: 24 Little Gulls.
On the land: 1 Redstart at lighthouse

Seawatching: 10 Dark-bellied Brent Geese.
On the land: ringtail Hen Harrier flew south, 1 Redstart.

Seawatching: Good duck passage with 4 Velvet Scoter, 120 Teal, 119 Wigeon.
On the land: 1 Redstart at lighthouse.

1 October
Seawatching: 2 Pale-bellied Brent Geese.
On the land: 1 Curlew Sandpiper at Whitburn Steel, 1300 Golden Plover, 5 Chiffchaff, 1 Redstart.
